on my surf there is an exhaust joint between the manifold and the first bend on the downpipe. it is held together by two large bolts with springs.
there does not seem to be a seal of any type, is this correct?

On most cars there usually is a fiber ring that slips over the long part of the join, then the springs hold it tight against the other pipe, this lets the joint move as the engine vibrates.

Normally a pretty standard part, measure the OD of the pipe, and go up your local car spares place.
