  • starter question

i'm getting the dreaded clicking sound coming from my starter, where i have to repeatedly turn the ignition rapidly to get the starter to fire

my first thought is that the contacts are gone in the starter but i had these replaced about 9 months ago when i was having the same symptoms and it solved the problem

Could the contacts be worn ALREADY?

the only difference between the last time i had the clicking sound and now is that before the clicking would occur at every start but this time the clicking only occurs in the morning at first start...it does not occur i the evening after work when the engine would also be cold

    any thoughts greatly appreciated

I believe their is some slight leeway for adjusting them, so they may not have been aligned correctly when they were replaced. First thing I would be doing is having your batteries checked, however. Colder weather can show a slightly deteriorated battery up in no time.

Worn contacts wouldn't really show any change for engine temperature. Tends to die suddenly!

If there isn't enough current getting to the solenoid, or if something is blocking it's travel maybe it would have the same effect.

On the plus side, melting a whole big tump of high-temp solder onto the contacts (on the kitchen stove, after disassembly) seems to fix the problem AND reduce the wear speed!
