We seem to be making progress. A kit is on the way to Antshiel for him to fit in his 3.0l td engine. His will be a under hose probe/sensor.
another kit is ready to send to Matt Fretwell as soon as I get his address. He will be fitting a in line probe/sensor kit into his 2.4 2LT-E.
We await the results with interest.

Well !! that's three kits fitted to Hilux Surfs..2 kits went in 2.4's and the other into a 3.0. A couple of other kits are on their way to other forum members. As you will see from the posts submitted, so far, all reports are good. It's a pity this whole subject got off to a bad start but all is well that ends well.
As I said right at the beginning. With your help we can come up with a "gizmo" that could save you a overheating event and make it available for approx 2/3rd's the price of importing one yourselfs from Oz.

It's an extra point of monitoring on the system. Not a cure all. As with anything, no one device alone is probably going to stop the inevitable. Monitoring every part of the coolant system would achieve bugger all if the head cracks of its own accord. It's more an extra level of protection. Same as running a temp gauge to monitor true coolant temps around the 'stat. This mod comes into its own when the sneaky leaks arise.

how come no body's tested one of these on a petrol motor?

Would it need any adaptation?

are there any differences in the running temperatures? or the coolant flows?

These alarms can be fitted to any vehicle regardless of the fuel it uses. Cars,Vans.Trucks,Plant, Gensets or Boats. They can even be supplied with a engine cutoff relay.
You are quite right, the alarm will not go off in all cases of overheating, It is a coolant loss alarm, no more or less. It will normally go off in the event of coolant loss long before the temp gauge starts to rise, in fact if the gauge starts to rise,even if noticed it is often to late and damage is done.
Just had a email from a Landy owner. 60mph down the motorway, alarm starts screaming, pulls over and finds the waterpump bearing failed, coolant pouring out. Saved the day and ordered another kit for his other car.
It's reassuring to hear it "beep" every time you switch on, telling you your top hose is full of coolant and not dripped away overnight. How many check their levels every morning??

As unfortunatly they only loss the coolant after the head cracks and pressurizise the system.

What about a leaking hose. bad water pump seals, leaking heater core and a dozen other reasons an engine can loose coolant. Any of these will cause coolant loss then overheating and possible destruction of a good head.

Simple reason there is the ratio of V6 to diesel owners on here. They will work exactly the same on either. The coolant system on any type of vehicle works on the assumption of there actually being coolant in it.
