  • Convert my 2.0 petrol to 3.0 td an easy swap???

    Hi All,
I have just bought a 1990 Hilux Surf petrol auto and was going to convert it a RV8 but there seems to be quite a LOT of work involved So i am now considering changing the 2.0 petrol lump for 3.0 derv lump is this a straight and easy swap ie will it just bolt straght onto the autobox. Or would it be easier to just go out and buy a 3.0 Hilux Surf auto any advice or suggestions very muchness appreciatussus
    Cheers,
    Chas.

you will need the engine g/box .wiring loom engine ecu and g/box ecu.your better of buying a 3.0 ltr surf.its not an easy task.in fact i would stick my neck out and say its far easier to fit a v8.

Right now you have both got ostrich necks tell me please how it would be easier to convert to V8 than derv yes i have a RV8 3.9 and ZF autobox just sitting in my garage as already mentioned over on mods section. BUT how do i retain 4x4 and use the RV8 mated to the ZF box come on then how easy is that then lads eh and no i cannot drive manuals so HAS to be auto
        Cheers,

It can be done - this is a 2.4 to 3.0 conversion

But I agree with Mark & Rick coz as you can see its a big jobbie!

As said before no adaptor housing exists for Rover to Surf autobox or ZF gearbox to Toyota transferbox . It needs someone to make it . I would go for a 3.0 litre V6 petrol 4Runner autogearbox and cut and shut the bellhousing using the torque convertor mated to a redrilled Rover flex plate to give you the V8 Rover and full Toyota gearbox and transferbox set up.No ECU on the 4Runner autobox (as far as I know) .
Thats how I would do it but I dont want to or need to.

If you want a V8 I'd not bother with the rover and go right with the 1UZ-FE - (Lex V8) at least then you can keep the Lex auto box and make fitting a little easier...

                        - or if you so desire roll with the Castlemain Hotrods R series gearbox to 1UZ bell housing and go manual V8 with an R154/R150 and Hilux transfer box... at least then stock sizes etc are the same... add that to XS power 2UZ Tundra headers for nice flow and a meaty sound

Don't get me wrong I love my 3.0 diesel, but if I was putting an engine in I'd not go to all that effort to put a factory engine in!!
                        More Lift.
                        More Tyres.
                        More Engine.

I agree entirely BUT my balls haven't dropped yet and my Surf cost me just under a grand so would be more than the car is worth And as many previous previouses i have a RV8 3.9&ZF&LPG just sitting in me garage BUT seems a hell of a lot of work so i thought 3.0derv route mabe a tad easier to do but maybe not
                          Cheers,
