Diff pinion bearings

does anyone know if its possible/advisable to nip up or re-torque the nut on the diff pinion as a temporary fix, as my rear diff pinion has a bit 1-2mm of side to side (up down) play and is a bit winey under load, and i'm trying to put off replacing the bearings.
