Diesel Treatment

Bought a bottle of Wynns treatment today. The tank was full. I had heard about putting it in the air filter, but having changed may air filter only a couple of weeks ago, I decided to pour some straight down the air intake. She started to run lumpy, so I opened the throttle a bit and the revs just took off. The valves rattled like crazy. Smoke everywhere. I put the rest of the bottle in the tank.
She's driving like a dream after the treatment but could I have done some harm?

if it was this it is designed to go into the diesel filter, and it works, cant see it doing any damage but it wont do much good in the tank, only thing you put in the air filter on a diesel is easy start spray on tired engines,

This was a £3.50 bottle fuel additive that cleans the injectors etc. I have done the same with the Redex before but without the dramatic results. Judging by the circle of black soot behind the truck, all over the spare cover and rear window, it shifted a lot of crap!

it does shift it better than redex, try and get hold of some in the picture, pour it straight in the filter

Right. I hooked the bottle out of bin the and re-read the destructions carefully, including the warnings. Says

Shouldn't have done any damage, Diesel engine top ends are pretty strong (apart from 2.4 heads). The rattling will have been worse than normal Dieseling because of the Kerosene which has a very strong burn and lower flashpoint than Diesel. It will have burnt easier and therefore ignited quicker causing the "pre-ignition" noise.

It certainly wouldn't be worse than using easy start.

Erm, beg to differ here, but anything inflammable put into the air filter on a diesel can and will/may cause damage, I have just suffered a split air hose AND a shattered ns. headlamp because of an inflammable in the air filter, read it and weep - http://www.yotasurf.co.uk/Forums/showthread.php?t=3215

Note that I only found out the inlet air hose was split later, thats why the Surf was going like 'S**t off a stick'!

Yep I agree but only if you get blow back, which shouldn't happen if the valve timing is correct and the valves are sealing correctly. Blow back happens if the mixture ignites before the inlet valves are fully sealed causing hot combusting gases to exit the inlet valves and back up the inlet tract igniting any flamable gases or fluids in the inlet tract. This can often happen on older engines if the valve springs are weak or if the timing has slipped. I have seen it, has a sound something like a backfire but coming up the inlet instead of the exhaust.

When I worked as a mechanic I remember working on a Ford A Series Truck which the owner had fitted an "easy Start" injector into the air inlet hose so that He didn't have to get out to make the beast start on cold mornings. That is basically where you should put easystart anyway and it is pretty similar in effect to what Phil put in his truck.

The good news is the truck was humming like a bird (stupid expression) today on the M/Way and the lumpiness has not come back.
