  • Dont do this!!!

I am such a putz, as the sun came out for a few moments today I came over all mechanical and decided to clean the air filter as I'd noticed it was pretty badly clogged up.
So I took it all out and washed the foam with petrol, which did a good job of cleaning it up.
Now for the stupid bit, I forgot about diesels and how they work and didnt let the filter dry properly, when I started the motor it knocked VERY LOUDLY for about 20 seconds and blew the nearside headlight glass to bits, oh dear.
On the good side the motor goes like S&*T off a stick now, on the bad side I need a new headlamp for my 91 2.4TD - DOH!

    ...Woodie - Muppet 1st class.

    Q. Is the glass separate or do you change the whole thing please?

didn't petrol disolve the foam? what filter you got? should use filter oil on a foam filter, don't put it in dry.

Glad to be of service Pete, all I can do myself is laugh really
Bigman, I know mate, but the filter was so clogged I wanted to see what it would run like clean, I had planned to add a little gear oil or something but forgot to engage my brain before carrying out maintenance tasks
The air filter is a 'Finer' filter I think, the outer is removeable foam and the inner is foam but enclosed in a wire frame.

(PS. I managed to get a headlamp assembly this afternoon but have noticed the flexi air hose that joins the filter box to the alloy bit on the engine is split, see parts wanted. 09/Feb)
PPS. as my firm went down toady I'll have plenty of time this week to fix it and pester the hell out of you guys! :P
