To get my Surf through the MOT I had to get some new shocks. The garage phoned me to say that the old one's had a section out for a *sensor*.

Anyone have any ideas what he was talking about? I thought it might have had something to do with my Altimeter box of tricks.

When you say a section out for a sensor, do you mean a wire loom out? it is probable that you had adjustable shocks fitted, do you have a switch inside for Hard/Soft Suspension settings?

      shocks

Yes that could be it. The shocks I had were adjustable but the shocks from Milners weren't. Where can I get the right ones? And should I ask for the other *good* adjustable shock back???

AFAIK the adjustables are only available from Toyota, that said most people change for uprated aftermarket shocks and are more than happy with the results.

When you say should you "ask for the other *good* shock back?", I assume you mean a pair were replaced altough just one was faulty? The simple answer is no. Shocks should always be replaced in pairs, as having unmatched shocks across an axle could lead to some rather nasty handling tendencies, unmatched includes a new and a used shock of identical type

            Hi Alef

            1. How many shocks have you had to buy for the garage to fit.
            2. Has the garage refused to fit the new shocks. ( If so why )
            3. Are you sure that the garage is not just telling you that they are different. (ie not adjustable)
            4. I have had Milner shocks on my first surf and found them to be excellent. They were the same ride that I had when I had the adjustable ones set to hard. If your changing them for non adjustable I dont see what the problem is.

              new shocks

              Hi Geoff,

They fitted the new shocks (from Milners) no problem and they put both old shocks in my Surf when they brought it back.

The guy from the garage just phoned me to tell me the new shocks weren't adjustable and that there was a slot where a wire went. He just wanted to check with me it was ok to carry on fitting the new ones.

It must have been to adjust the ride from hard to normal.

When I discovered a had one dodgy shock I found out that Toyota originals were £180 each (yes each)- that was a shock!. I replaced all of mine for less than that with fairly decent Pro Comp Explorer shocks and haven't looked back since.

After 10+ years or so on (and maybe off) the road any Toyota original adjustables could well be approaching 'end of life'. I can't see many people on this forum passing over nearly £600 for a full set of Toyota original shocks (especially when they weren't much use anyway).
