  • damn fuel filter changes

Being the master at rolling onto forecourts spluttering on diesel fumes as the engine runs out of motion potion, on Saturday ... I did it again. I chuckaboomed up to the diesel pump thinkin haha made it again and stuck a half tank in her.
Of course she needed coaxing to get her started again but its Wednesday now and having changed the fuel filter bleeding injectors taking filter off again and filling it with injector cleaner and a good 20km spin up the open road (running very sweet), she still needs coaxing to start and its only about 5 days that I posted a reply to a question re reliability where I said this baby starts first time everytime no messing.

:no sniggering in the cheap seats:

jim, try not to run it below quarter of a tank as it pulls the $hit through off the bottom into the filter, and yes theres always $hit at the bottom of a diesel tank specially when they are steel, as condensation builds up indide the tank unless they are full

I dont reckon I've ever had the needle up in the top half of the dial Ian, will watch that from now on. Still dont figure why she's still abusing me since I gave her a new filter and colonic irigation...

And to think I took pics of the filter swop at every stage to pm to Andy so he could stick it in the write-up slot, while at the same time if anyone pm'd me for opinions like I'm touting now, I'd not have a clue

a mate of mine had a similar problem starting in the morning, turned out there was a slight air leak, and every-night the diesel would drain out of the fuel lines causing a small airlock.

That sounds like a nightmare job. What about putting a second in-line fuel filter in?

I got a similar effect to cleaning it out when the wife put £20 worth of unleaded in mine.(too much to top off with derv and run it through.)

There is a 17mm drain plug on the bottom of the tank. By the time the Surf had been recovered and given it a good swish round I got £30 worth of petrol/derv mix, stained a dirty dark colour and full of bits.

An expensive way to approach the problem but my tank will be cleaner now.

The wife is trying to tell me every cloud has a silver lining!!!!

                petrol in diesel

my wife filled our diesel citroen up with petrol lol right to the top if you put a milk bottle of engine oil in the tank and swish it about its ok. it will run lumpy but its not a problem as the ouil is there to lubricate the seals in the pump lol just for future referance no need to drain it out mate mark

I took advice from a very good Mechanic. If it had only been £5-£10 worth I could have got away with topping off with derv and keep topping off regularly to dilute it. I did not want to go for the engine rebuild.... So out it all came. Lots cheaper than a trashed engine..

by just adding oil you are not diluting it, a diesel engine will knock on a 50/50 mix of petrol and diesel what do you think will happen when the glow plugs are glowing red and petrol hits them, it would be like shoving a hot poker in a can of petrol, diesel ignites on compression alone, petrol explodes when its ignited, be like running a car on thinners

Adding petrol is no different in theory to the propane assist kits, adding a little to the diesel will cause a dodgy motor to run cleaner and make more power as the gas or petrol will get ignited by the diesel combusing, letting you use less deisel to each fuel charge.

Obviously you gotta watch how much petrol you chuck in, LPG kits are set up properly when fitted to run nice.

update on my poor starting after running v low on juice and then changing fuel filter:

having refitted the filter again, bled all injectors then doing a real injector cleaner job with a bottle of bardahl injector cleaner poured into the filter and brought for long spin ... the engine runs smooth when warmed up but still needs to be coaxed to start
today i went out popped the bonnet and just gave the hand pump a few darts and heard a hiss down under near the diesel pump
i have a leak somewhere down there and its dripping off the other end of the filter-pump fuel pipe
