  • Quite a bad diesel leak from Injector pump.

...... Said my mechanic on the phone just now. Oil leak is from Rocker cover but diesel leak is coming from gasket at back of diesel injector pump.

What sort of things could cause this and what is the likely (estimated cost) of any repair?

Any ideas, you experts out there?

Most likley the top seal on the fuel pump, quite common, £7.80 from Milners.

Ok, cool – that’s a relief. Well my mechanic is giving it the old… *sharp intake of breath* “I have to send it to the ‘diesel specialist’ and it’s quite a big job (even though he doesn’t know for sure what it is). They may keep it overnight and I will need a courtesy car” etc etc etc….

Am I better to take it to the specialist myself and ask him to fit this thing and then not worry about it? Or let them ‘investigate’ the problem and spread my legs nice and wide for them?

      What do you think?

I asked him how much it might cost to sort and he quoted ‘around £100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!’

How much would an ‘average priced’ mechanic charge to fit one of those?

Thanks again for the swift response.

Fit it yourself and save the £100. It'll take all of 30 minutes.

Ah ok....How do I do it then?

Can you talk me through the process? I am a novice.....

The people I spoke to on the phone said they need to reset the pumps / pressure etc..... Are they just just trying to extort more money out of me?

What would I need to do?

          Thanks.

Do a search on the search button for fuel pump, it'll bring up loads of info and pics of the fuel pump.
From memory it's 4 allen bolts on top of the pump. You need to unscrew a connector when the top of the pump is off and fit the seal that you buy from Milners.

It really is an easy fix.

Ok, cool. And this is definitely the same pump as on my 1993 K reg SSRX 2.5 auto?

If it is then I will sort it myself.

Anyone got a link to the item in Milners please?

                jon.

                      Ah brilliant, thankyou.

Would any of you be willing to do a walkthrough guide for me?

When I say I am a novice, I really mean it. I am not stupid, just not experienced. Am willing to try though - my Dad is ok with cars though.....

Any takers? Even if I call you when I am doing it and you talk me through?

If you've got a EFI truck its easy, take off the air cleaner housing and rubber pipe, then you can see the top of the pump.

Unplug the wiring from the top of the pump, and take off the fuel return pipes.

If you want to completely remove the lid, you need to bend down the lock tab under the big nut, then loosen the nut a little.

Unbolt the lid of the pump.

Then holding the socket from underneath take the nut off and the lid will come free.

Then you can check its flat, and install a new o-ring, and if you have it the o-ring around the electrical socket fitting as well.

The pump seems to be well hidden by pipes etc.... Is this meant to be so hard to reach?

Or am I being a biff?

A biff ! You only need to remove the airfilter pipe. All the others just bend out of the way to gain access.
