    hello,hello,has any body got any idear,s .just recently got my self a surf,great!?,gave it the once over when buying,all seems well,weather starts to get cold and seems mine needs a blanket,lets the glow,s do there bit starts her up seems to be misfiring gives alittle gas the sun go,s in behind a big black cloud,cloud chases me around when i puts me foot down,injectors got the thumbs up from the doc??,also got a little like tapperty sound go,s away when warm.had a full serv not much diff.flushed injecters/pump with medcine but still poorly. happy surfing gazza drives lovely not abit lumpy?

    How does it run when it's warmed up? If good, try a search about glow plugs.

      diesel missfire maybe caused by one of the following

      clogged fuel filter ?
      low or uneven cylinder compression ?
      air in the fuel system ?
      injection pump ?
      injection pump timing ?

          the tappy sound when cold is most likely 'diesel knock' which is quite common for diesels or so ive been told and not to worry about it!!

            To help cold starting diesel engines are equipped with a pre heating system, which comprimises of four glow plugs, a pre heat timer a dash mounted warning light, relays and timers.
            The glow plugs are positioned directly in line with the incoming spray of diesel, when the plugs are energised the diesel passing over them is heated to its optimum combustion temperature allowing easier starting.
            The length of the pre heating period is determined by the pre heating timer, which monitors the temperature of the engine via the water temperature sensors and alters the length of time accordingly.
            Pre heating is started when the ignition is turned on, the light goes out on the dash but the plugs continue to heat for a bit longer, until the engine is started. If the engine is then not started within a certain time the power to the plugs is cut, preventing batttery drain and plug burnout.
            After the engine has been started the plugs continue to heat the incoming diesel for a further period of time. This helps to improve cold fuel combustion whilst the engine is warming up, this improves cold running, which results in quieter, smoother running and reduced emmisions (the black smog). Again this length of time is measured by the water temp sensors allowing the plugs to pre heat the fuel until the requires engine temperature is reached.

              thanks guy,s never knew there was a water senser involved? as for the dash light pretty much go,s out straitaway ,got told to wait for buzzer before starting?..any body know best place to order parts eg. rings/ valve shims?

                One other thing to look at following Marky's post is to drain the water of the bottom of the fuel filter.

                Koi: "on the bottom of the filter is plastic thumb turn type of nut (usually white). undo this a couple of turns and then pump the plunger on top of the filter until diesel runs through if it dont undo the nut a bit more until it does. Once diesel runs through do it back up job done."
