Unfortunately no one can guarantee that you will not have head problems. Flushing is just a precaution, not a cure. However, there are lots of 2.4's out there that have not had any head problems, many of which have probably not even flushed the coolant. A lot of people have found this site in search of help when problems arise. There are vast numbers of happy Surfers out there who dont know it exists.

well sorry to put a different slant on the story but heres my recent chain of events.
got my 92 2.4 surf registered 10 days ago
done 350 glorious grining from ear to ear miles in 5 days with no problems whatsoever (apart from knacked rear window motor)
spend a full day changing every fluid/filter/cam belt/etc which included a cooling flush (using flushing agent) which seemed to clear loads of crap/etc.
done another 200 miles the next few days with no probs
then suddenly temp gauge starts to rise a little bit (but nothing startling) then ten more miles down road heaters go a bit colder so we pull over and its lost about a litre of water so we top it up hoping its just a cleared lock (which I was 90% sure I didn't have). anyway to cut a long story short Its parked in my workshop now ready for strip down tommorrow with suspected head/gasket fault.
couple of questions for you experienced surf guys.
1-do you think its had this fault since export and been bunged full of stopper.
2-have a had a air lock due to in-efficient bleeding (had heat from both heater matrixes and no cold pipes etc).
3-whats the chances of it being the gasket only.
4-and if you tell me what I think you will, re-con or new head (are they a different design).
thanks alot by the way only found this site after buying the car but brilliant help so far.

              @ majicj
              1. Is there any bubbling in the expansion bottle?
              2. Any steam bellowing from the exhaust (normal vapours which you see on cold days usually reduce when the engine warms up. If it's steaming you'll know!!)
              3. Check the rad cap

A pressure test of the cooling system is the next step. If it fails, it's unlikely to be just the gasket. If the head needs replacing, make sure the block has not been damaged too, or you'll soon be back to sqare 1 again.

More than likely, quite a few of us on here think a lot already have a cracked head when they come over
2-have a had a air lock due to in-efficient bleeding (had heat from both heater matrixes and no cold pipes etc).
Its quite possible, my heater both worked after I di the flush etc but checked it over the next couple of days and it had lost water, not a lot. then settled down and was fine
3-whats the chances of it being the gasket only.
About 1% sorry to say, of all the one with these symptons it has always been the head.
4-and if you tell me what I think you will, re-con or new head (are they a different design).
What ever you do DONT get it repaired, or buy a recon/stitched one. It was a design fault on the head and a with a recon one it will only happen again. The new heads are redesigned.
thanks alot by the way only found this site after buying the car but brilliant help so far.
