  • K & N air fliters

Hi all, when I get me surf back from the mechs hopefully with new head and all working great, I was thinking of getting a little more ooomph.

I know about the waste gate mods etc, but was wondering whether a K & N air filter woud increase horse power on a diesel?

Anybody know for sure, and if so how much extra power??

    .

I have a K &N on the Bullet - not noticed any more ummphhhh, but it makes a lovely rumble

Tip - fabricate a box or some soundproofing for it though or it whistles like mad!!

              Oh well. If one must.

The performance filters work by reducing the restriction on the air intake,
which is how they increase HP by some degree. However, they reduce the
restriction by filtering less crud out of the airflow. The particulate filtering
ability is less than the stock filter. You get power at the cost of larger pieces
of dust and debris entering your engine air intake. The filters were designed
for racing team purposes, where the engines are completely stripped and
rebuilt, or even replaced, on a regular basis, usually only several races. A far
better method would be to simply make a less restrictive intake for the
standard air filter housing, without the noise deadening baffles. You would
get increased air intake whilst retaining the full filtering abilities of the stock
filter. The performance filters are detrimental to engine longevity. How much,
              it's hard to say.

Removing the intake baffles can achieve the same growl.

Awh well - I guess when the engine dies we'll just bung in a spare one then, for now I like the rumble.

Hmmm but the K&N was a pressies from MrT to his LAdy friend the Bullet so 'twould be wrong not to use it....

Must admit, you need not worry like most of us about your engine going
bang. Well, apart from the mechanic taking his time to get it sorted.

Thanks for the info, I,ll give that a miss then.( although with 100,000 miles already engine wear is a mute point)

BTW, where are these baffles that need to be removed??

The piping that goes from the air filter housing to the front of the Surf.

disconnect the flexi pipe 90 degree bit from the intake leave it connected to the airbox but turn it round 180

Do you happen to have a photo of that mod you would be able to post please?

I quite fancy doing it but are there problems with the car running hotter if it's sucking air from the engine bay?
