Do you know the 4wd is only to be used on loose surfaces. If you've been using it on tarmac & other hard or grippy surfaces you will suffer from transmission wind-up .This prevents the 4wd from dis-engaging.
If it hasn't been like this for long you may be able to free it by taking it on a loose surface & inducing some wheelspin.
A few bumps can also help to free it off

Hmm, should have come outta 4wd by now. Have you tried chucking it in reverse and stepping on the throttle? Sometimes that can help it drop out of 4wd.

It it definitely in 4wd? Sometimes the light can stay on although it's not actually in 4wd. Try it on some loose gravel and see which wheels spin. You should be able to get the rears to spin very easily if it's 2wd (and have some fun doing doughnuts!). If all 4 seem to be driving.....I'm not sure what the solution is....maybe you should be checking the vaccuum hoses that control the front ADD components or even the diff / transfer case oil levels. ?

If you have the electronic t/case, the soloniod often sticks if not used for a while, its on the back of the t/case, other wise its the ADD stuff, look for two solonoids with some vacuum hoses, usually on the drivers side inner wing by the fuse box, and down on the front axle where the acuator is, next to the diff, long side axle. this could be worn and jamming on the shaft, or just sticky.

There is a relay under the dash, by the steering column, that works the 4wd and just follow the pipes and wires to check for splits or breaks.

              Good luck.

Here's some good info on the ADD system:

As the other posters have said- sticking the car into reverse gear is the first thing to try. If this fails vacuum pipe check is next.
