  • tailgate rear window

hi , the tailgate rear window on my 93 ssrg has a mind of its own and goes down for no reason, it wont go back up unless you keep pressing the switch but only goes back up in millimeters at a time, when it does this there is a clicking noise from the back offside (could be a relay or switch jamming) anyone had this problem or any ideas ??? HELP!!!!!!!!

I have the exact same problem. First the window won't go down and the wiper didn't work. Then when I located the relay box in the rear panel I found by moving the wiring loom slightly the clicking relays stopped. I thought it was a lose connection but since 'fixing it' its started doing it again this time opening the window all by itself but wiper works pefectly.

My guess is its either a broken wire in the loom (from all that opening / closing of tailgate) or the relay module is faulty. Seeing as Toyota want £385ish fopr a new one you can bet its that!!!! Gonna open it up tonight and see whats inside.

Anyone know where I can get a second hand one for a '94 3.0ltr ?

      cheers

Try Bob or Chris, but if not ,it is possible to get the relays from a good elec. spares shop & get them replaced at an electronics repair place

Milner's have quoted £230+VAT for a new one for my problem. Since Bob and Chris weren't able to help sourcing me a used one, I'm considering taking the plunge and buying new. Meanwhile, my brother (who's an electronics diagnostic technician) has got my relay unit and is trying to sort it out, but so far has not found the fault. We've tested each relay individually, and they seem ok (but bear in mind mine's an intermittant fault), but having re-soldered the relays onto the board in a different order (i.e. to try and get a different symptom to trace the fault), so far no luck.

My main worry is that I'll end up buying a new one, and it'll still not work!!! All the diags I've conducted so far point to the relay unit, but equally all the unit's components appear ok individually - the IC chip is the only bit we can't test...

I am starting to get hacked off with not being able to open the tailgate though - this messing around has meant it's nearly 3 weeks now!!

          btw Milners are on www.milneroffroad.co.uk

Cost me £40 odd to get a shop to replace mine ,so the relays themself can't cost that much.
I,d change all 4 for new & see if that solves the problem.
Mine started out as an ocasional intermittent fault but got worse until I bit the bullet .
Btw make sure all your window seals are well lubricated to ease the strain on components

anyway all fixed now. Just removed the key switch from the tailgate (cleaned and WD40 the runners at same time) and cleaned it with WD40. Works a treat now no probs at all. I had put some 3in1 oil in the switch last month to make it little smoother so maybe that was my prob or perhaps water got in? Either way its sorted. Recommended job regardles as the window now runs smoothly and quickly!!

cheers and good luck with yours

                tailgate window

hi, thanks for all the help , ideas advice etc, tried puting wd40 into the rear lock, there has been no clicking from the relay and the window has been behaving (no going up or down by itself ) but now i can not operate rear window from the external key switch, so i am going to strip it out and give switch a clean etc, whenever i get the time, cheers for now.
