As your Surf is an auto, it might be a good idea to fit an auto transmission cooler. Especially if you intend to do a lot of towing...

my trany tunnel gets hot towing or not, but like cmar says, i't may be kinder to the gearbox to fit a cooler.

firstly check the gearbox atf fluid make sure its up to the mark, engine running and norm temp, go into low and back to park before you check it, this has been covered before on the old forum, wont hurt to change the atf fluid in the box either, this will bring the temp down

Thanks for the help lads. I think change of ATF and a cooler will be my best option.
Any ideas on the best place for a cooler, only found one on the net from Larkspeed at £98.
          Cheers

              Transmission Heat

Changed the ATF and noticed a slight drop in centre consul heat, so took it to a Auto Box specialist. Informed me that a cooler is fitted as standard and after taking it for a good run, tranmission tunnel nice and warm, he put a probe into the gearbox and told me that the temp was well within the limits but as there is no heat shield fitted and the gearbox sits very close to the vehicle floor this is where the heat is coming from. The only answer is to try and fit a heat shield as a larger cooler would only cut the heat down too much and impair the gearbox performance.

was this without the caravan on the back though, surely it will get hotter when towing

Every Toy I've ever been in the tranny tunnel gets toasty, even the manuals.

Yon can never cool your auto box fluid to much. (obviously you don't want it COLD!) The rest of the world will tell you only good things will come from a extra tranny cooler, especially if your towing. I think your bloke didn't wanna get involved.

They are easy to fit, you just use one of the lines going to the rad, into the new cooler, then back into the rad cooler, and your good to go. Most are only about 12" sq (or less) by 1 1/2" thick and you can put them in front/behind the main rad.

The standard 'cooler' is only a small couple of tubes in the bottem of the radiator, unless you have some sort of 'tow package' fitted from the factory, then it will already be like the one I've described above.
