Hi all, just had a look under the truck to investigate a rattling noise and found that there is some wear in the front offside cv joint. The shaft to joint is fine but the slack appears to be between the joint itself and whatever it connects to in the front diff unit. It is possible to move the cv joint about 4mm each way would this be the joint that is worn or something in the diff casing. My vehicle is 3.0 ssrx auto 1995 kzn 130. Any help much appreciated.

Do a search on 'Front Diff Flange Movement'.
I asked the question when I first noticed play at the front diff. There is some useful information there.Brian

Cheers panrixx, what I just read did ease my mind a little but it still does not seem right to have so much play. Is it possible to cause premature wear or failure of the joint or diff or will the Surf go on for years to come without incident. I can only assume it must be acceptable as I had new cv boots done last December by a reputable 4x4 dealer and they never mentioned any excess play in the joint even though it could have been a perfect oppurtunity to squeeze a bit more money out of me. Hopefully other members will be out checking their Surfs tomorrow and giving us some posts which may enlighten us a little more.

I noticed this a year or so ago and posted same questions.
people said nothing to worry about, most trucks are like this,
AND someone check a brand new hilux - same diff flange movement!

Cheers Andycook. I think I will have to stop referring to the problem as cv joint related as that seems to be misleading, and having seen photos of the dismantled assembly it almost certainly does seem to be the diff flange that is moving. Would be nice to receive a few more replies confirming the same though. Cheers guys
