Check the plate that covers the oil filter on drivers wheel arch for loose bolts as i had a similar noise. Also skid plate on gearbox.

I hope your problem is a much simpler, and cheaper matter but if you have a manual gearbox do a search on Dual Mass Flywheel.

I had a rattle coming from the bell housing which sounded like a secondary diesel knock. This turned out to be a disintergrating dual mass flywheel (Japenese style) which uses a sprung flywheel and solid clutch plate. I have now fitted a 4Runner (English style) solid flywheel with a matching sprung clutch plate.

All is now well. Cost of parts only (flywheel, new flywheel bolts, spigot bearing, exchange clutch, rear crank oil seal and front gearbox oil seal) from Toyota was around £550, after a 10% discount I negotiated on some of the parts.

As I have said, I hope your noise is something much less involved.

        Regards
        Brian
