  • Engine Surges??

    Weird behaviour here.

I am driving with the Overdrive Off, on a light throttle the engine is surging without me doing anything, it's as if I am lightly depressing the pedal and lifting it.
Does anyone know what causes this?, I have replaced the air filter, oil and oil filter. The one thing I haven't done yet is to replace the fuel filter, although I have run redex through the system.

I guess that it would benefit from a tune up, but does this require 'Surf' experience, or can a standard diesel tune be performed?

    All contributions gratefully received.

i have come across this before on a diesel, it is quite common and normally caused by the pump, however because the surf has an ecu the pump is not forced to be the problem, it could be something to do with the throttle sensor, i would say its one or the other

just a thought here,i'm no expert, but i had a diesel van that used to surge for no apparant reason.it turned out that the fuel pipe had gone porous, letting air into the system.replaced the pipe,no more problems.hope it turnes out as simple as that mate.

Had that too on a works tranny van. Sucking air into the fuel line. The boss let it get serious before listening to the drivers and it started conking out. Had to bleed the injectors twice between Canning Town and Stratford .
        It's only a hobby!

          engine surges

My 1992 SSRX 2.4 td has just started doing this when I pull up at junctions. The rev counter just lifts slightly the goes down again. This has started just after I have treated the engine to a bottle of redex. I wonder if this has anything to with it.

More likely that yours is to do with the brake servo as it re-pressurises (Or whatever it does!).

If life's an uphill struggle then downhill from now on can't be that bad?!

What do you mean by re-pressurising the brake servo? Is it a sign of a problem?

check the vacuum pipe that goes to the servo as well
