Oil brand names don't mean a great deal

Interesting read about oil classifications, even if the original post is years old. As a college project, back in the 80's, we did a simple heat & wear test on rotating bearings to see what oil was most lubricating. The best oil = no definable wear, was from a local (Taunton) motorfactors, budget generic stuff. The worst oil of the six tested, having a major wear issue (should have been called grinding paste!) was the Castrol (might have been GTX back then).
So....I don't buy big branded named oil anymore, possibly as the big oil names & car production may be in cahoots to keep people buying cars when their 5 year old trusty (or however long the warranty is) gives up it's last.
