  • Free wheeling hubs

I've only been here a few weeks and have noticed a handfull of posts about MPG's etc. but no mention so far of 'free wheeling hubs' for the front of our Surfs to cut fuel consumption, is it do-able, or doesnt it work for some reason?
If it is done ,where, and how much please?
I know for instance it wont work constant 4WD motors like Range Rovers (coff) but the Surf is switchable, so ???

    Woodie.

Yes it's doable. Aisin Hubs are the ones to go for, from a Pickup or from eBay.

Best reason for them though is if you do a serious lift then it will stop the CV joints wearing out so quick if you leave them open until you need them. The angles the joints run at with big lifts is too much for them normally and with the ADD they are running all the time. With manual free-wheeling hubs, the front CV joints are stationary unless you are in 4WD with the hubs locked.

    Cheers

Also the ADD disconnects most of the moving parts so the benefit in MPG with freewheeling hubs isn't that great.
If life's an uphill struggle then downhill from now on can't be that bad?!

        There are threads

Have a hunt around as this was discussed a few weeks ago. I have free wheeling hubs, leave them free wheeling all the time.

Steering is one finger, super light, and the truck is super manueoverable. Mpg is crap except on a run, although this is more due to the need for a tune up than anything else.

Now that sounds great! Could have done with those when as a drunk co-pilot of my mates L200 at 3.30am on the Pembrey race track off road course we got lost and ended in deep s***t literally! (we found a local farmers cow crap pit and had to wade in and engage the fronts - not good).

Any hubs from a UK IFS pickups (newer ones about 98-on) will fit, not solid axle pickups, the splines are different. DOn't expect to see amazing differences like you would on a Range/Land Rover as one wheel is already dissconnected by the ADD, its major bonus is CV joint wear reduction.

Steer clear of the Toyota auto hubs, they are $hite....

Means Automatic disconnecting Differential. It's a coller that slides over one of the front driveshafts connecting and disconnecting it from the diff, allowing 'shift on the fly' when selecting 2WD to 4WD. (not anything to do with diff locks)

                              Guys,
Can you look at my summary and tell me if this is right pls:

                              For a 2nd Generation 3.0TD (KZN130) Manual:

AISIN Manual FW Hubs can be used. They can be taken from post 1998 Toyota Hilux with Independant Front Suspension (IFS). The hubs must accomodate 26 Splines.

Roughly how much are these BRAND NEW from Toyota? How much should I expect to pay for em from a Breakers? Can these be reconditioned/rebuilt easilty? Any UK links to reconditioners/ Parts sources?

                              Thanks
                              Udhi
