Can someone explain how elec. sunroof works?

I'm trying to fix my electric sunroof - the motor is fine, and seems to turn the metal cables OK, but the glass doesn't move and now I have it all in pieces I still can't understand how it works.

Can someone please explain just how the tilt-and-slide mechanism works? I've been staring at it for an hour and still can't see what I assume is blindingly obvious.

Also, 3 photo questions -

1. I've found 2 pieces loose in the sunroof tray - I know where the metal bar fell off (the mounting point has snapped so the bar fell out) but what is the rubber thing?

2. On the side where the metal bar is intact, what does the rusty looking metal springy bar do? It looks like it should wrap under the shiny metal rod, but I can't see why, and I can't see how it fell out.

3. On the right side the rotating cable sticks way out, on the left side it's snug to the end of the runners. Behind the motor's spindle only one end is visible. Should the cable be a single continuous thing or is it in 2 pieces?
