  • Oil Filter - Easy way off

I just spent bl**dy ages trying to get the oil filter off (yes, I had removed the wing panel) and just could not get any chain or strap wrenches on and still have room to move the handle.

A friend then told me the easy way. Beg, borrow or steal a pair of those giant plumbers pliers. Go in from the top and simply clamp them around the filter and bingo, the handles are so long that there is plenty of room to ease the filter around until it can be unscrewed by hand.

Next tip. Get three strips of old carpet. Put one over the tyre, one beneath the filter and the third on the floor under the engine, it saves a lot of mess!!

Try wrapping a sheet of course sand paper around the filter, its never failed me yet.

you need the three pronged type oil filter removal tool for this, a socket fits on the end, the prongs open up to the width of the filter, you can buy these from machine mart

Just tell your body builder neighbour that it's too tight to get off. They can't resist the challenge.

            oil filter removal

I had the same problem, just get a jubilee clip that fits on the filter, tighten it on the filter so that the knuckle is easy to get at with a screw driver, then just tap the knuckle of the clip anti-clockwise with a hammer and long screw driver, the filter comes undone really easy.
This can also be done with the fuel filter, which is also hard to get undone, try it, you will be amazed.
When putting the new filter back on, tighten the clip on the filter (after fitting new filter) that way it will be lost and ready to release the filter.

It was just as well to correct that, Snow Wolf, although we all knew what you meant, cos Tony would not be able to resist picking it up. ...... Just a test to see if he reads all the threads after the hols
Damn good tip by the way

I've found this procedure never fails:
1:Get biggest flat bladed screw driver you have.
2:With tip of screwdriver against oil filter apply deadblow mallet to opposite end of screwdriver
3:Repeat step 2 above with some enthusiasm until screw driver has passed completely through oil filter
3b:inbetween steps 2 and 3 wipe flying oil off face and out of eyes
4:Remind oneself to wear safety goggles next time!
5:Use handle of screwdriver to twist off oil filter until it can be removed by hand.
6egrease engine bay, floor, self, garage walls!!

                      It's a real bodge but does work......honest!!!!!!

Garage ?? GARAGE ?? you are so lucky to have one.
All my maintenance is done outside which can get a bit tedious when it is raining.
Hot tip: Do the oil change on the BACK lawn, HER sense of humour does not extend to the front lawn.

Degreasing....Hmmmm interesting idea....does that include parking it on the back lawn at the fire station and giving it a jolly good hose down.

But seriously I have always fitted my filter hand tight with the seal well wet and it comes off easily when it is time.
