Steering rack mounts

My Surf has just failed the MOT on the steering rack mounts , has anybody had to get these , and if so do you have a part number , Milners dont keep the bits .

I presume that this is the 3rd Gen. Is it the rubber inserts or the metal mount itself gone. I have had experience of the Rubber mounts going on a Ford Escort and managed to make some out of rubber block by cutting a duplicate of the existing but making it a bit larger. Sorry but I'm not sure if this would work on a Surf as I don't know how the rack mounts on as I've not seen one. You could also make them out of Neoprene block if you can get it and it would be much better than the stock (thats if it's like the escort). Neoprene block would make them harder and give you much more steering feedback (as long as the rest of the steering system is OK) and less slack.

eek! Now I'm wondering whether mine are on the way out Would vague steering be a symptom of this (apart from all the other things it could be)?
I would have thought that the mounts are the same as a 1996+ Colorado as they have the same chassis, engines and running gear etc. This is the sort of thing Elvz would know....

Well I have been to the local Toyota dealer , and he tells me that they only have one mounting for the rack , it's on special order and will be here tomorrow , but have just had a quick look under the motor and it seems like it has one D shaped one held in with a clamp , and another that goes through the casting of the rack , sort of a round block with a bolt through it .

Will see what happens when I collect the part tomorrow am .

Hi Andy had the same problem with the wifes 3rd gen on the MOT but it passed the SVA OK, Chris "Steetluge" got mine mot,d for me as well as the SVA and even with new bushes in the Rack still moves a bit the way the bushes are designed allow the rack to move.

Did you manage to get all of the mounts for your rack , because Toyota say that you have to buy a new rack , so the only one that I have been able to get was the D shaped one in this picture .

Got it through the MOT with just the D shaped rubber , it cost £22 for the thing from Toyota , they say that if you need the other two rubber mounts that you have to buy a steering rack to get them , although I did find them in America from http://www.northwestoffroad.com/parts/urethane1.html but it would have taken too long .

Out of interest, does the steering feel any different now?

Yes it feels a bit tighter on uneven roads , I'm also thinking about changing the steering stabiliser , which after 100,000km should be up for renewal , so maybe that will help .

Might order that kit then 'cos my steering seems to have a lot of play in it. Might not cure it but it should help.

Didn't think 3rd gens had steering stabilisers (the horizontally mounted shock as on other mk1 & 2 surfs etc)...?

I spend most of my time under 2nd gen surfs so you might be correct on this , will have to have a look next time I get under it , and going by the weather it will not be for some time I think .
