clarify please

I just want to be sure that the 3rd gen has a centre diff which would eliminate transmission windup if driving in 4wd on tarmac?I am pretty sure it has (so wind up won't be a prob),but someone has posted differently on a review site(maybe trying to wind me up?).All help greatly appreciated.The post can be viewed here :

I think it's an option called multimode transmission (but I could be completely wrong. Some 3rd gens (maybe all) have them though.

Yes Andy, it's the Multimode 4WD system or somthing like that. As far as I know, it's standard on all 3rd gen Hilux Surfs but optional on US 3rd gen 4Runners during certain model years if I remember rightly.

Rob, that review is OK, you can use 4wd on the tarmac, with the center diff working, and proper 4wd, center diff locked for offroad only, depending on the lever location.

Bug*er me, now I'm confoosed even more!!! Dunno if I was wrong or right, but as a newbie 4x4 driver, I drove to Devon for 3/4 of the way in lightish downpour of rain in 4 wheel mode loaded to the rafters with kin and baggage, after being assured by the father in-law it would be ok. We got there without any probs, and once there I reverted back to 2wd and my baby handled beautifully for the whole 10 days.
Wot I want to know now is... was I a lucky boy and got away without winding or is my Surf built with multimode wotsit thingy?
