Fuel pump solenoid problem

Hi Guys
My mate was taking his Surf for an MOT the other day and unfortunately while it was there it stopped running. The guys in the garage said there was smoke coming from the fuel pump solenoid. Now it won't run at all.
Ant idea's?

Hi,
I am a wee bitty confuddled here. Thought the diesel fuel pumps fitted (up to about 1998/9 ) were mechanical jobs ie no solenoid...maybe I am wrong ?
If I am however correct, I am not certain where any smoke would be coming from and would need to "see it" as there are I suppose a couple of possibilities, rare but possible...
