Wheel (?) noise

Hi,
My '94 Hilux Pickup has developed a rhythmic "chuff" type noise which seems to come from the nearside only. The noise sounds a bit like the old steam train "chuff-chuff" and gets faster as I increase speed. Definitely NOT a grinding. knocking, clanking sound. Anyone any ideas ??

Maybe a bulge on the sidewall of the tyre thats rubbing on something?
Something rubbing the brake disc?
C.V. joint gaiter split and rubbing? (assuming you have a 4WD pick-up)
