  • Rear Wheel Bother

This morning i wanted to swap my front and rear wheels round to even out tread wear.
I often have the front wheels off so they came off easily BUT i could not get the rears off for love nor money.I have not had the rears off for over a year.
They just simply would not budge. I tried everything including a large mallett, but i was beaten. All i have to show for my efforts is very sore hands.
All i could think to do was to soak the rear hubs in WD40 and then i will try again tomorrow when i've been for a drive.
Anyone else had this problem? anyone got any solutions please?

i reckon everyone's had that problem...
they're just tight on the hubs... might pay to stick a bit of copper grease on there when you put them back on.

it's just a case of beating them off and making sure it doesn't fall off the jack!

pops had the same with a flat and it took me and danno with pops making sure the jack didn't slip!

tell me about it..my recent tyre change became an exercise in humiliation..the fitters would believe that the wheels hadn't been welded on to the hubs..in the end, it took the heftiest lad, lying on the floor whilst swinging a circus tent erecting sized sledge hammer across the underside, whilst myself, and one other simultaneously layed boot to the tyres from the outside..

anyway, some liberal doses of copper slip later, and they now glide off with ease...worth remembering for next time..don't half make you swear at the time though..and the thought of that hammer missing the tyre whilst you are sitting legs akimbo was quite sobering too.

IF i ever get them off i'll be liberally applying the copper slip.

I've a feeling i'm going to need some help to get them off as they appeared to be welded on this morning.
God help me if i get a flat in the meantime. It'll be a recovery job.

The Alloy oxidizes over time and welds it's self to the hub, Slacken off nuts, drive forward and hit the brakes, this should crack them. If not use a bigger hammer as I had to. Once off I used emory paper on both surfaces and Copper slipped them.

As i have 2 sets of wheels (on and off road) and change them frequently i use just a small amount of oil each time for lubrication ..
Did you know ....copper slip is abrasive

Well i never!!! you should have come and found me, i was on the second floor in the control room.

BTW i got the rear wheels off this morning with a huge sledgehammer and lots of brute force, they are all greased up and back on now.
Only problem is i snapped a rear stud off the hub when tightening the wheel nuts up, it must have been cracked or something because i hardly put any pressure on and it just dropped off.
Should be ok with the other 5 well tightened though?

                        Thanks for the advice folks.

Only very temporary, they arn't hard to get out, take the drum off and punch out the old stud, then you can insert a new stud from the back and pull it into place with a wheel nut and spacer (socket or something)
