  • Goodrich A/T's

I have a possible issue with the supplier of my Surf. It has 265/75 16's which look almost new.

I know these tyres are not going to be perfect on the road compared to a normal road tyre, but can folks please tell me how they find them.

My car has a wobble through the wheel and a fair amount of vibration. I have received posts else where on the site about possible causes. Without going over these too much, assuming wheels are balanced and the car has not been standing etc. how should it feel on these tyres.

It has been suggested that its the design of tyre causing the problem. I cannot see this. Noisier, less bite with the steering, slight hardness I would expect but a wobble and vibration?

    Rob,

I would have the tyres checked to see if they are "true" as its not unheard of to have a brand new tyre with a fault.
Other things to check are balance, tracking, shocks, discs, bearings, ball joints, track rod ends, idler bushes and steering damper if fitted.
One other thing to check for vibration not wobble is propshaft balance.
Just my 2p worth hope it helps.

    Cheers

      Rob,

I have read on the web stories of the BFG's wobbling when they advance wear. Nobody on the forum has had this issue. All wobbles have been solved with correct balancing. Mine wobbled when they were worn but they needed balancing and I couldn't be bothered. (THis was after the wheel bearings were tightened)

I have a brand new set of BFG's (2000km's) and they are excellent, good grip levels and no wobble. They will go out of balance as they wear due to the amount of rubber on them but as yet nothing.
They are not noisy, they handle well (Allthough I have pro shocks on which make a big difference)

Have a look at the condition of the tyres, do they look like they are perishing with cracks, etc in the treads. The Jap vehicles do low mileage but the tyres are on the vehicles a long time so end up shagged before they wear down. "EDIT" Oops, just realised you said they looked nearly new.

If they look in good condition then as per the other thread the problem probably lies elsewhere.

Pop into a tyre place, or phone them with the markings on the tyres. They are all date marked and any decent tyre place will tell you how old they are.
I still had 2 originals on mine. they were 9 year old and the shelf life is only 5 years

BFG A/T's are one of the best A/Ts around, we've had them for over a year on the 4Runner, didn't even get then balenced as I fitted them in the back garden with tyre levers, only a faint vib at about 68-70.

When getting them balenced, try to get the tyre place to get the on the machine using the wheel stud holes, not the center of the wheel like they usually do. Toy wheels are Lug centered, not hub centered, meaning they are made with the wheel bolts being the proper center of the wheel, not the hole in the middle.

Have heard of duff alloys from the factory, but not many out of thousands of owners on US bulliten boards.

More likely to be a duff tyre, or duff fitters!

Yep had BFG AT's on mine until recently, not a wobble, noise and good grip it sounds like your taking it to a Mickey Mouse factory take it to a real tyre place.
Have now got BFG MT's on mine gone from 30 x 9.5 x 15 to 31 x 10.5 x 15 and there ain't no noise, no wobble grip is good and the At's are more geared to the road than the MT's so where ever your taking it sounds as much use as a chocolate teapot.

              Many Thanks

The dealer has now taken the car back to see if he can resolve the problem. I shall pass on some of your advice. Cheers

YUp, mine has A/T's on too and wobbled loads whenI first got it at speeds of around 80kph... a balance at my local tyre place sorted it out and it's been cool ever since.
