The linkage from the gear lever to the transmission may need adjusting?

thanks for your replies, no its not in 4wd, the rac bloke who as just left ,managed to get it to reverse a few feet before it stopped, but it was struggling,he reconds it could be the reverse pressure switch, as it drives ok forwards, thanks.

I'd get the fluid changed. My mate's truck wouldnt go into reverse when it was cold but once warmed up it was fine.He changed the fluid and it was fine.He did sell the truck shortly after, so not sure if it was cured completely.

thanks for the info, though i had the fluid changed last year, could it be suffering from transmission windup, the bloke mentioned it, but reasoned it should happen while moving forward, not just reverse, the reversing beeper sounds, so its going into reverse ok, its as though somthings stopping it moving, could it be windup, if so, how do i cure it, all your ideas welcomed, before i have to call garages, thanks.

if it's in 2wd then it will not be wind up... unless it's not disengaged properly... but if you jack up a wheel then it should release... and the 4wd disengage

                how exactly isn't it reversing??

is it reving as if in neutral and not going anywhere?
or is it as if there's something stopping the wheels moving? i.e. a load on the engine, but no movement or it's rocking a bit and not going anywhere?

i had an escort did this, one of the springs in the brake drum broke and the brake snagged when reversing...just a thought

does it matter which wheel i jack up, front or rear,1 wheel or 2, just on the off chance its wind up, as i drove it for a short time on a icey road, when in reverse and you rev it, it doesnt make a effort to move, you can drive it forward, try again and somtimes it will struggle as though theres somthing stopping the wheels turning,it feels very jerky, it will only move a few feet then stop, and no amount of reving will move it, yet it drives forward perfect, we put it in neutral to push it out of the way, but it wouldnt move backwards at all, what a start to the new year, thanks for replying.

probably best to jack up 1 side of the car so 1 each front and rear wheels are off the ground... then stick it in gear and try engaging / disengaging 4wd just to make sure...

if you can get all 4 wheels off the ground then that would be better... dunno if you got lsd, but you'll need both rear wheels up if you do.

just out of interest is my surf rear wheel drive when in 2wd, as ive been told its the front wheels only that engage for 4wd, she will reverse in 4wd but struggles or refusses to budge in 2wd, i,ll wait to see what a auto box specialist as to say in the morning, the 4wd is disengaged, so shes parked up as i dont want to risk driving her, any ideas, thanks.

hang on... you've surely got that back to front??

it's REAR wheel drive... push in the button and the FRONT wheels will engage ASWELL AS the rear

i reckon you've got 4wd and 2wd back to front and you're getting wind up, so that's why it won't reverse...

describe what position the buttons and levers are in?

thanks for all your help so far, ive taken the surf to a automatic transmission specialist who as test driven her, he states the reverse clutch as siezed and it needs a new gearbox costing a grand, so ive booked her in at another specialist who actually test and check the settings on the gearbox for free, as he stated you carnt tell the problem by driving her, as if i havnt got enough problems some low life set off her alarm last night trying to nic my headlight covers, cracking them in the process, in your opinion does it need a new gearbox, thanks.
