Rear window/hatch motor?

Looking at getting my mits on a 3.0td 95 hilux which apparently has a nackered motor for the rear hatch. Seems this is a fairly common problem can anyone give me any pointers, tips, costs of standard motor replacement & fitting & any options to prevent it happeneing again?

hi I replaced mine not long ago,the motors are quite dear new around £110 but if you do a search on here you will see that you can use motors from other toyotas so if you've got a decent s**** yard near you you could save a few quid.are you sure its just the motor as mine needed a new regulator as well which was £85 new.its not a difficult job to do.again if you do a search you will find instructions which are spot on.as for it being a common problem you have to remember that these are 10 years or more old and that back window must have been up and down many 1000s of times.

A 1990-1995 toyota Carina passenger front window motor is identical, i went to a breakers and got a nearly new one with fresh teeth on it for £40.It took 15 minutes to fit.
Once fitted i lubricated the mechanism with grease(not wd40) and also lubed the rubber window seal with silicone spray after thoroughly cleaning it all.
This puts far less stress on the teeth of the motor if everything is lubed up, and it now works a treat.
It's a 2 person job to get the old motor out and you need to fool the tailgate into thinking it is closed by double closing(till they click twice) the catches at each side of the tailgate. Once you fool it it allows you to manuallu pull the window out with the tailgate down to allow you access to the bolts holding the motor on.
Be careful and support the window carefully as it is very delicate.

cheers folks may still end up paying someone to do it as my lack of mechanical skills are legendary & i can normally break stuff just but looking out the corenr of my eye at it......
