  • Is It My Power Steering Belt?

When I have the steering on full lock, even when stationary, I hear a loud squealing noise. The belt seems to be tight enough (I can just about twist it a quarter turn). My end stops have new nylon caps and have been greased today.
    Any ideas please.

The pumps can squeel when they are loaded at full lock. I would check the power steering fluid levels (Or if really keen flush and replace it)

    Rich.
If life's an uphill struggle then downhill from now on can't be that bad?!

It does sound like the belt. It may feel tight enough but could be worn? Do you feel any judder through the sterring wheel on full lock?

If its not a new belt, it could be hard and smooth, try a new one if your sure its tight enough.

The belt may be tight but that means very little.V belts grip on the sides and if it is worn it drops into the pulley.Once the belt wears to a certain point the grip on the sides of the pulley is lost.Dont be tempted to tighten any more or damage to bearings etc. will occur.New belts are cheap compared to repairing damage from an overtightened belt.

Thanks to you both Nev and Pete.
Looks like I will be putting a set of belts on the Christmas prezzy list. I guess I should have changed them when I did the timing belt.
