  • New 2.4 engine wont start

    Hi there,

I have just had a second hand engine fitted to a 2.4 LN130 Hilux Surf (Due to head cracked on old unit). My mechanic has fitted everything corectly (or so he thinks) but the engine just wont start. It is turning over and is getting fuel but will not start.

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and it was something simple.

    Any help appreciated.

    Kind regards

Could be a lack of compression.

        1993 model

Hi. It is a 1993 model. I dont know the history of the new engine. It was supplied from Tokyo auto spares and the head was taken off by them, inspected and refitted with new gaskets. The sump had also been taken off and inspected. As I understand it, the new engine came out of a manual model and mine is an auto, but would that make a difference?

        Thanks

If the engine came out of an earlier model , ie 1990 , it may not be EFI as yours should be due to year . There would be extra sensor on the engine block to control the ECU , if this is not on the new engine it ain't going to start .

Should'nt do, are you sure its getting fuel at the injectors? Sometimes its hard to pump fuel into the filter and pump when its all empty.

check the little shut down flap next to the throttle flap on the intake manifold is working and connected up properly, you can just try shutting or opening it when cranking the engine to see (I can't remember if its shut of open off thetop of my head)

One of the good things with a diesel is that if it is getting fuel to the injectors - at the right time - fuel pump timing may be well out) and there is compression, then it should start, les things to worry about than a petrol engine. So the things to check are:

              1. You are really getting fuel to the injectors, crack off an injector pipe and turn it over, diesel should come out.

              2. Check the timing - yes the timing belt cover will need to come off the engine - check it is not 180 degrees out.

              3. Check compression.

If all this is OK then it should start, it may not run well if it has an ECU and the engine is not expecting one, however it should at least fire up.
