  • MOT Question - rear shock absorbers

How likely is it that a set of old worn rear shock absorbers are gonna fail my MOT?

I know they need replacing - and one looks like its had a bit of a leak - its got that shiny oily feel to it, but i also need to replace a few tyres and the shocks might have to wait.

And whilst i'm on it...how do you replace the rear shocks on a 3rd Gen? The book i have only covers aussie trucks and they have a totally different rear end (wishbones etc). I can't even see where the top of the shocks are!!

Possibly will be a failure...just been helping the brother-in-law change his front ones on an Isuzu Trooper as the bushes had been raised as an issue.

it's easy to change the rear shocks... BUT...

hard!... there's not much room to get at the top bolt and it will be rusty and a real bitch...

there's only 2 bolts though, so not very technical, just a pain in the ass

So how do you get to the top bolt?

After looking underneath it looked like the shock presses up against the underside of the car with no visible means of getting to the top.

                        its a bit puzzling!!

yeah, but that still doesn't answer my question. How do i find the top of the shock?

It presses up against a large flat expanse (the underside of the car) and the only place that looks a possibility is through the wheel arch, but that feels solid and as its had a very thick coating of waxoyl i can't see if there are any bolts to undo the wheel arch.

I even bought one of those toyota workshop cd manuals which is supposed to contain the data the mechanics use and the one thing that doesn't get a single mention is the rear shocks.

Have you looked inside the load area under carpet on the wheel arch?
