Can anyone tell me when putting the engine back in should the torque converter be fitted to the flywheel or mounted on the gearbox shaft and bolted up after?

Doesn't matter, if you put the convertor on the gearbox first, you avoid misaligning the oil pump lugs on the converter.

But its make the gearbox heavier and harder to manage if working alone.

The only advantage of bolting the converter to the flex plate first is its easier to get the bolts in.

If you don't have much room between the body and the engine, some times the gearbox won't go over the converter if its bolted on the the flex plate first.

      converter

As an ex auto-box repairer we alway left the converter coupled up to the gearbox, less chance of damageing the "SEAL" or the PUMP.
