I recently bought a 1993 3 litre surf fitted with 16 wheels rather than the standard 15 inch , is this at all detramental to the vehicle,it does judder a bit when you pull away a bit quick on full or nearly full lock

hi brian,
any dealer fitting 16" wheels to your surf will automatically fit the correct size tyre`s. these will be a slightly lower profile and will keep the rolling radius {overall diametre of wheel and tyre} the same as your old set up. as for the noise it sounds like the old steering bump stops need a dollop of grease on em, common problem but cheap and easy to rectify. happy surfin mate.

Not sure if they were fitted by a dealer i bought it privatly and i still get the noise when not on full lock

Can you feel where the judder is coming from? i.e. pedals....steering wheel.
Does your truck have a manual gearbox?
What size tyres do you have fitted?

Not got it in 4 wheel drive have you, they dont like turning in that mode unless they are on a very loose surface such as gravel or snow.

I cant be specific it just judders through the whole car, it's an auto & the tyres are 265/70/R16

I thought they ran in 4 wheel drive all the time the small gear shift is in the high position

not unless you press the 4wd button

Short lever should be pulled bach towards the seat in 'H', and the button should not be depressed.
Also there should be no 4WD light illuminated on the dash.

Then it's definatly running in 2 wheel drive

265/70x16" is nearly the same as 31x10.5x15" tyres so no probs there .

Re: the juddering, are you sure the tyres are'nt rubbing on the wheelarch or body somewhere, 'cos you say it happens when you pull away on full or almost full lock.
Also, that size of tyre seems too big a profile to me on 16" rims,unless you have a lift of some sort!

Vince , I think those tyres should easily clear any standard bodywork , but if an odd offset then I agree they may foul something .

Yep, I just thought that aswell. Could be the offset and not the diameter.
Might explain why, and if they rub when steering.

Right i tried this today Small gear lever right back in H 4wd button out ie nothing illuminated on the dash plant your foot & it wheelspins on all four wheels, If you press the button on the stick it does make a click behind the dash & illuminates Any ideas?
