New CV joint 74 surf 3:00litre

Got a split CV boot on the drivers side of my 74 Surf. Its done 56000 miles.
The CV sounds noisy to me..Any body every changed one. How difficult are they to do as the local Toyota dealer wants lottery money to do it...Any suggestions welcome. I do have a bit of mechanical knowledge and the tools..
