would like to buy a surf, but i am being put off the idea with the cylinder head problems, should i let it put me off?
No don't let it put you off - only around 20% of 2.4's suffer the head problem and that is usually attrituble to overheating at one time or another causing the head to crack. (Bear in mind that the original heads have, in most cases generaly lasted for 10yrs+).
Most Surfs that have been in this country for a while have had replacement modified heads fitted. Biggest risk is with newly imported 2.4's unless there is documentation to confirm that the head has been replaced or the dealer is giving you a solid warranty. If the head has been replaced make sure that the replacement was a modified head and not a recon head and you should have no problems with it.
If you are still unsure buy a 3lt Surf - they are a totally different engine design so the head problem doesn't apply. Other than that the Surf is a fine vehicle, tough, strong and well put together.
