  • Diffs on a 3.0

    Hi all.

    I’ve a question regarding my 1995 SSR-X 3.0 turbo diesel (KZN-130)…

Does anyone know if the front and rear diffs on this model are interchangeable (assuming ratios are the same, of course)? I know that you can physically fit a rear diff into the front but is there anything specific to either of them to suggest this wouldn’t work correctly?

Reason I ask is that I’ve just had my front diff replaced(due to shot bearings, apparently) and the replacement unit is a rear diff from the same model/year, suitably refurbished and with same ratio as the rear already on my Surf.

Although 4WD mode and everything else seems to be engaging properly and working fine, the front diff does “wind up” a great deal when the steering’s on full lock. That may be normal but I’m just checking to make sure…

Any info would be great! Ta.

Nope, the front is a 7.5" diff and the rear is 8". Someone's got something wrong......

    Sorry,

You will suffer front 'wind up' on any surface that isn't really loose, the front and back axles, are pulling against each other when turning if the wheels aren't able to slip to make up the difference. It normally makes your front CV's groan or ping!

Exact, the front is a 7.5'' diff and the rear is an 8'' one. This means that also the lockers suitable are different front and rear.

Only are the same diffs the double solid axle Toys...

        Thanks guys.
Tony, had the "CV ping" so that stacks up. And I found out yesterday that the replacement front diff in my Surf is, in fact, a front diff as it should be! It all makes sense to me now... Apparently, I was wrongly informed by the garage bimbo when I picked the car up.
