  • MOT Failure 4 Dec 2023

    Hello All,

    1998 Toyota Hilux Surf Gen3 KZN185 3.0cc TD

Ive renewed all the bushes underneath the Surf. I've also had Both Wishbones replaced since I couldn't get the tracking done otherwise. The car has failed the MOT today due to Diff Oil leaking onto the O/S rear wheel drum brake. This wheel bearing
has been replaced twice now by two different garages. But it Still Leaks.

What are Surf owners doing regards this failure ?

Could I replace the whole Rear Axle and Drive Shafts ?

I've owned a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 90 Series for over 20 years without any such dramas !

    Best Regards
    Nick Branson - Leicester

Just make sure is the same ratio as the front diff, there are quite a few that done that swap on the 3rd generation,
I'm currently doing this but on my second generation ( lot more complicated)

So the Axle is a Straight Swap ? Even though the Land Cruiser 95 Series Axle has Disc and Drum brakes ?

Does anyone know the difference between a Toyota Land Cruiser 95 Series Axle A02A and A02B ?

4.100 diff no LSD possibly Difflock (check) A01B
4.300 Diff no LSD possibly Difflock A02B
                      4.300 Diff with LSD A02A
                      4.100 Diff with LSD A01A

Note that A02B and A01B is used for both locking and no locking diffs with the 4.300/4.100 ratio but you can easily check the diff to see if there is a rusty lump grafted on there.
happy to be corrected, but that's what I believe.

                        Is the A02B ok for a Gen3 Surf ?

It should be ok as far the front diff gearing is the same as the one you going to fit in the rear

Sorry, I am not a mechanic. So what gear is in the Front of the Surf Gen3 ?

                              Neither do I I'm a carpenter,
I don't know in the 3rd generation, but I know there is different ratios, they share nearly everything ( chassis wise) with the land cruiser 90/95 series hence straight swap quite a few things.
any mechanics around your area that can confirm The ratio of the front diff will match the new one?
