  • Auto Gearbox Cooler KZN185

    Hi folks.

I know that there have been a few posts about coolers in the past, but I don't want to reopen an old thread.

I had my gearbox reconditioned a couple of years ago because the innards had turned to mush; imagine metal paste and you've got it. My mechanic didn't reconnect the cooler because he didn't want the swarf from it coming back through the gearbox, and then it got put on the long finger.

General driving has been fine, including motorway speeds. Startup engagement could be slow in cold weather, but nothing 30 seconds of running the engine doesn't sort.

The problem comes with towing, which I've been doing more off recently. Even after towing an empty trailer I find a puddle of gearbox oil underneath after parking up.

My mechanic reckons that a gearbox cooler will sort it, but we're having difficulty finding one. He's looked for a second hand one but I'm inclined to go new as I might end up just inheriting problems. He reckons that fluching the old one won't get rid of all of the filings in it, and that they may end up getting into the gearbox and causing problems.

Unfortunately Roughtrax aren't shipping radiators out of the UK at the moment, and I'm in Ireland (They're temporarily closed at the moment too).

Toyota haven't gotten back to me.

Can anyone recommend a supplier or another possible solution?

    Thanks.

I fitted a aluminium 3 core radiator off eBay for the auto ,and a13 row oil cooler and plumbed it inline ,no problems works fine any oil cooler will do just depends on size were you can fit it and buy the proper rated lines to fit it

Try contacting a radiator repair specialist, they might be able to advise if they can flush it out for you.
Otherwise, just buy an external oil cooler (it's just a small stand alone radiator) and some fittings and pipe and mount it somewhere with half decent airflow.
