rear diff

after a 15 mile road trip i was under surf to find where knocking was comming from(antiroll bar securing clamp snapped, so off to main dealers tuesday ) i notived rear diff housing was quite warm to touch is this normal or have i a major problem bruing, a little concerned as im pulling caravan down to mendips next week HELP

Warm is normal - it's just the gears threshing the diff oil about - energy creates heat. If it's really hot you may have a problem - might be worth checking the level/condition of the oil if you are worried.

Its OK, if you look under there after driving around in the rain, the center section will be dry where its gets hot.

thanks for the reassurance guys, the road outside is on a hill so im off to park it some where level so i can check the levels,,by the way there is a sticker on the diff housing saying "LSD oil only" does this indicate i have a limited slip diff, or is that normal on surf's.also any idea what oil (mineral or semi/fully synthetic oil and quantity in rear diff,plus is the front diff oil different. to change all fluids (diffs,transferf box, autobox) is there any advice

Sounds like you have a limited slip diff therefore you must use LSD oil only (otherwise you might not have a limited slip diff)

hi all i have just looked at a attachment with the grades of oil and grease ect to be used.on it ,it says the parking brake should be between 13 and 16 clicks,the garage has adjusted mine to about 5 or 6 clicks but he says the brake shoes on the rear are ok,but surely by having them adjusted that much it will wear the shoes out quickly would this be right and should i get the garage to put them back to how they were before

The shoes will only wear if they are actually rubbing on the drums. Find a slight incline and freewheel down with the engine off. You will soon notice possibly hear if the shoes are rubbing or not. Often if the handbrake is set too low it will take extra brake pedal movement to operate the brakes as the rear shoes need top move much more to contact the drums. Also handbrake cables stretch so do need adjustment from time to time to compensate.

thx silver its just after reading about the 13-16 clicks for the handbrake which mine was at before the service it just seemed to be alot of adjustment madewhen it seemed to hold ok b4

The links are just .jpg files - they should open in Windows Paint or any image editing program but Iv'e Emailed them anyway.

13-16 clicks would fail the MOT for excessive travel?
the shoes are self adjusting, just the cable should need adjusting.
