Has anyone got a convincing explanation for why so many Surfs wait for 10 years and a long sea crossing before deciding its time to throw a tantrum and crack the head. There must be some science behind this.

They crack because of over heating thats a fact, not science. Why they do this is open to debate.
It has been said it was a design fault on a batch of heads on early surfs, it could well be that. Those that have not suffered problems had a caring owner who had the head changed in Japan. Not one of those that stuffed some block seal up additive in the engine and kindly shipped it off to us.
Some say the Japanese are not the best for maintaining a car. So with a poor maintainance record, the fact it probably sat at a dock for two months then someone got in started it revved the n**ts out of it. Drove it 300yards on to a boat, spent three weeks at sea then transported to a dealer where you buy it.
Whatever the reason, your buying in some cases a 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 year old motor with no history, been shipped half way round the world.
You buy it because you like it, so the head goes, if replaced with new then you got a motor that will go on for ages to come.
Buy a 14 year old escort and see if you can get it to strart.
Above all, what ever cause the head to crack it may be a pain to some to buy a motor and the head goes after a few weeks or months or over a year in some cases. Follow the advice of some on here about buying a 2.4 and you should find a good one.
Hell you getting a better deal on 2.4's now than ever before, find one with a NEW head on it for same old money or less and you got yourself a good motor.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

so are we saying that if the head gets changed it should not go for some time after ?????

If a NEW head is fitted the surf will go on & on & on. The old heads have lasted at least 10 years, so even if the new head were to go the rest of the surf would probably be past its sell by date
