  • oh dear!

    Hi guys

Well, the old girl finally gave up on the M5 last night. Big bang, then a 40 minute wait for the AA.Today spent three hours striping the engine down only to find that the timing belt seems ok although I haven`t got the timing cover off yet. Took the rocker cover of to find lots of metal fragments around the camshaft. It appears to be pieces of the valve lifters and the round disks that sit on top of the valves. God knows what made that happen but it seems that the head will have to come off and be striped down. No doubt its going to at least new valves. I can only asume at the moment that the timing belt became slack for some reason and it jumped a few teeth and threw out the timing? if anyone has any ideas then I would be gratefull.
I`ve asked before but does anyone know how I can stop the crankshaft from turning so that I can get the nut off that holds the pully boss on? As you know, I need to remove the pullies to get the timing cover off. Is there an access point that will allow me to secure the flywheel teeth some how? If you know what I mean! Thats the only way that I can think of to stop the crankshaft from turning.

In the pulley should be two threaded holes, simply put two appropriate bolts in these and use a lever between the two bolts to hold back whist you undo the pulley one.

As to what caused this, snapped belt, tensioner gone west????
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

try a big bar against inner wing rap the end that hits body with a rag or something to prevent damage and turn the key the damage has already been done so should be ok internally.( remember engine turns clockwise so when bar locks it will undo pulley bolt so bar should be against nearside inner wing.) hope this helps

Sounds like a dropped pre-comb. chamber

They frequently develop cracks and sometimes in such a way that a chunk can fall into the chamber. Not a pretty sight : http://toyotadiesel.com/phpBB2/viewt...=cracks+precup

COuld also be a dropped valve like mine had, ran it for too long with the tappet clearances a bit slck, knocked out an adjustment shim then broke a valve, took out on eof the pistons and the head (dents and a completely fubarred combustion chamber.

Try undoing the tension arm on the power steering pump, swing it over and run a bolt thru the end into one of the holes on the pulley face (M10 I seem to recall), can be used for both undoing and tightening crank bolt

Works for my 1990 SSR Ltd anyway and the didn't knack the arm
