  • Timing Belt Puzzle

Ok, I'll start off by re-iterating that I'm thick (anyone who has read any of my previous posts will know this).

    Long story short:
I needed a timing belt fitting to a 1993 3.0. I spent hours trawling the net for info until I came to the conclusion that the 3.0 was a comparative doddle - quotes like 'my mechanic did mine in 15 mins" etc etc.

So, armed with this information I had a local mechanic (Ken) replace the timing belt.

When I went to pick up my beloved Surf, Ken said it had been straight forward albeit very tight on space. However, and this is where the puzzle begins:

Ken said that the bottom end of the timing belt is connected to the Fuel Injection pump! Now this flies in the face of my very extensive (NOT) knowledge of how a timing belt works.

I've checked out what Ken was saying and he seems to be right!

My question is simply this: WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? HOW DOES THIS WORK?

Here's hoping for an answer from a mechanical wizard!

Rob, the 3.0 timing arrangement has both gears and a belt, a gear on the crankshaft drives the diesel pump ( these gears are inside the front lower timing casing ) which in turn drives the camshaft timing belt. It is supposed to put less stress on the belt due to the crank being out of the picture.
    Cheers, Steve.

On the 3.0, it only goes round two pullys and a tensioner, as Stevo said
The crank drives the fuel pump via gears that also power the oil pump, vacuum pump (& power steering). Its a nice setup that makes the timing belt an easy job.

I was quoted £100 by my local garage to fit a new timing belt (that I will supply) to my 1KZTE 3.0 engine. Based on what people are saying above about it being an easy job does this sound way too much?

I've read that some people recommend also recommend replacing the tensioner at the same time...

BTW, my local Toy dealer charges £80 / hour +VAT for imports!

o.k. thanks everyone, glad I was told its an easy job!

I don't think the garage was trying to rip me off, they probably just don't know how easy it is. I will go back to them with the relevant workshop manual pages in hand (or at least ensure they charge for the time it takes rather than the £100 quoted).

                      Or just do it myself...

Time to change the timing belt?

I have just noticed the T-Belt warning light on the dash board. Does anyone know how long I can drive until it needs changing? And how much?
Cheers by the way for all the help on the rear window story! It's fixed, finally!

The light is on because it needs changing, changes are 100,000km, how long can you drive it?????? 100k is the reommended change so its due, it could go on for another 100k or it could fail in 100kms, its that how longs a piece of string question really. Get it done as soon as, its not worth chancing it
