  • Max roof carrying capacity

    Hi folks,

can anyone tell me what the max load is for carrying on a roof rack. I haven't splashed out for one yet but need to know if different roof racks will carry different weights or what? Thanks as ever.

    Very difficult question to answer.
2nd Gen can either support a roof rack over the door frames and rear roof skin... or like mine, direct through to the internal roof braces.

How much will it take... mine has had about 250kg on it... made it very unstable to drive, especially round corners... in high winds... much better to have bulky stuff up there, and the heavy stuff lower down... And my roof skin did defect a small amount, not something I would want to do on a regular basis.. but I know it can do it without too much trouble...

That probably hasn't helped at all...

Mine is a heavy duty job that is riveted directly to the roof.
Like Andylala I have had over 150kg up there and it was not clever
They were 4m lengths of 12x4 timber
My view on roof racks is that there is often a trade-off between strength / capacity and styling. Mine holds a fair weight and looks ok too.

I think the maximum rating for carrying on the roof is 75kg. I've had more but as people say, it ain't clever.

        Cheers
