Hi,
Have just joined the site and have had my surf for about 4 months. I have a problem with my radio aerial - it will only partially retract/extend unless you give it a gentle helping hand. I know where I can get whole aerial replacements from but I'd rather fix it if possible. Has anyone else had this problem and is it fixable?

when it is fully up (the aerial) , spray some wd40 on it, give it a few mins, wipe it clean and lubricate with 3 in 1 oil/wd40 or some have used fairy liquid ??
operate it up and down a few times to get the lubricant worked in and this should solve your problem.

i thought i'd keep the welsh input going, there is possible a section of the plastic toothed belt which has lost some teeth. to check, undo the retaining nut at the base of the mast, switch the radio on, and guide the aerial completely out, to refit, note which way the teeth were facing, switch the radio off, and guide the mast back in. if it is the mast, then a new mast is quite cheap, and easy to install into the existing aerial unit. i had one delivered off ebay.com (usa) for a bit less than £14.

If you buy a complete aerial it probably won't fit because of the steep angle of the wing. If you can hear your motor running but the aerial wont go up and down, you can get a replacement mast from Toyota, which replaces the worn out part.

After a bit of a delay I have finally got around to trying to sort out my aerial. Took the mast out and the teeth component has snapped in half! Hence the aerial not going up and down. Can I just replace the mast and any ideas on how to get the bottom half of the teeth out of the aerial unit? I have half heartedly tried to access the unit from under the wheel arch but it seems to be riveted in places.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

you have to take the unit out and open up one side of it to get the old bit out then you can just put a new mast in. These should be available in the forums online shop soon, or if you can't wait untill the forum has them you can get them from milners or toyota.

You will have to drill the rivets out and when putting it back together either re-rivet or use self tapping screws.
