How we did it on my 2nd gen was to raise the whole rear end and support the frame on axle stands. Jack the rear suspension up, but not so it lifts the car off the axle stands, attach the spring compressors and tighten. Drop the suspension and the spring should pop out. Take spring compressors off the old spring and attach to new spring, and tighten. Place compressed spring back onto axle and jack up the rear suspension but not so it lifts the car off axle stands, remove spring compressors from new spring.
Repeat on other side of the axle. It took us 1 1/2 hours to do the first side spring and shock, but using this technique on the other side it only took 1/2 hour.

      Hope this makes sense

PS yes take off wheels otherwise you can't get to the springs.
