  • KZN130 LSD Diff Question

    Hello all,

First of all, my name is David and I'm from Barcelona, in Spain.

Here there are few 4Runners, and I'm searching Australian and English Hilux Surf forums because you also have diesel ones, not like in the USA.

    Well, my first post:

I’ve earned some money and I’ve been thinking about putting a pair of Aussie Lockers front and rear of my 2nd gen, importing them from the USA.

I talked with the American Aussie Dealer and was decided to pick them until I’ve noticed one thing.

I’ve been watching the off-road.com Differential Identification chart and noticed one thing.

My rear differential is a factory LSD, although now it acts like an open diff.
My diff code is G295, this means 8’’, 4.100 gears and 4 pinion LSD.

Aussie only sells lockers for 8’’ 2 pinion diffs. So, I’ll have to go to another brand, like Powertrax No-Slip.

I want a silent locker cause my 4Runner is my daily driver.

My question is, somebody knows if and 8’’ 4 pinion locker will work with my 8’’ 4 pinion LSD diff?

What other lockers can I put? I want to put a silent locker like Aussie…

    What can I do?

    Thank you very much,

    David

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I presume you are talking about ARB air lockers. If so then 2 pinion or 4 pinion makes no difference. The original diff spool is replaced completely by the ARB unit and all you re-use is the crown and pinion gears. I've got an lsd in my Surf and a rear ARB is on the shopping list - I say go for it.

      Hi Gamedaw,

I was talking about lunchbox lockers like Powertrax, Detroit or Aussie, not manual lockers.

      The main reason... Price

      Thank you,

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Just been having a look at Torq Masters site and they do say that if you've got an lsd then you have to swap to an open diff before installation. Why not just get a second hand diff and install the locker into that?

          Limited

If a Surf has 'LIMITED' on the tailgate - does it mean it has an LSD or is it just a marketing thing - "Limited Edition" or some rubbish like that?

          Cheers

I don't know because I've not an Hilux Surf but a 4Runner (Steering wheel in the left side).

Here there were only 4Runner and later than mine, 4Runner VX (With sunroof, rear heater and 265/70R15 tires and fender flares like your Surfs).

I think all came with LSD.

Anyways you can check what kind of rear diff you have. Check http://www.off-road.com/toyota/tech/other/4_axles.html and see how.

Most Surf imports to the UK come with open diffs. True 4Runners and, rarely some imports have LSD. Even rarer is the factory locking rear diff which was probably a Toyota option that very few Japanese buyers took- though they do exist.

The only real way to tell is to look at the transmission code on the VIN plate in the engine bay. Even then you have to assume it it has not been modified. I've seen a couple of Surf imports in the UK that came with ARB air lockers already fitted when in Japan! Had I known what to look for when buying my Surf three years ago I would have looked for Toyota rear locker, modified ARB, or LSD Surf. As it is I'm stuck (sometimes literally) with a standard rear diff.....

                My diff code is G295.

                It means

                G: 8'' Diff
                29: 4.100 Diff Ratio
                5: 4 pinion LSD

Still looking what lunchbox locker can I fit...

Do this problem solve if I put some locker that replaces my actual carrier?

                Thank you,

                David
