diff locks

could sombody tell me if it possible to fit diff locks to a surf?

i thought the hilux pick ups had front diff locks.

If you can do you have any idea of the cost, is it a big job and do i get them from the usual places, eg millners or roughtrax

Yes you can fit them, pick up don't have diff locks on the front, your probably thinking of locking hubs.

Its a average/big job, to DIY it you need a dial guage to set the pinion backlash.

Auto lockers range from £300 each upwards, manual lockers are getting on for £500+ Plus fitting.

Or weld em up for next to nothing like I did!

To be honest, I don't think they are worth the money for 99% of the offroading we do in this country, good tyres and plenty of flex in the suspension will get you almost anywhere. But having said that, a normal surf suffers from very limited front suspension flex, so a locker will help if you lift a wheel, but auto lockers usually click annoyingly round corners on the road, and manual lockers are very dear.

If you REALLY lucky, a very limited number of imported 90ish pickups come with a factory fitted electric locker in the rear, these are very desirable, but I've only seen a few around, but unless you have the whole axle, a few mods are required to fit them, and they won't fit in the front.

All the modern UK spec double cabs have electric lockers in the rear as well
